The UA has instituted a program recognized by the American National Standards Institute. It identifies Plumbers, Steamfitters and HVAC journeyworkers as highly qualified if they pass a 'STAR' exam in their field. The tests are difficult, but the successful candidate can earn thirty college credits for passing it. We are offering review courses preceding the tests, taught by instructors who have taken it. It can be a great opportunity to reinforce your qualifications.

PLUMBERS LOCAL 22 EXPANDS ORCHARD PARK HQ TO OFFER ADDITIONAL TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES
U.A. Plumbers & Steamfitters Local 22 has expanded its Orchard Park headquarters in order to offer its apprentices and journeymen additional training opportunities.
"In order to continue to attract a higher-quality candidate for entry into the Plumbers and Steamfitters union, we believe this expansion makes it more attractive to those individuals to take part in our training courses, which will now be offered Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. You simply can teach an individual more in that kind of time period," Business Manager Mike McNally said. "This will also make a big difference, especially in the classroom setting where there will be an extended time period of training on a daily basis. With so much going on in our members' lives - from family and kids' baseball and soccer nights - this will give them the opportunity to take classes during the day, instead of at night," he said.
Local 22 members can take advantage of a number of teleconferencing and computer/web-based training at the union's Orchard Park training facility. From having the ability to view outside work sites and hook up with a number of authorities on new technology, Local 22 offers its members nothing but new and innovative technology to keep on top of this ever-changing industry. "Our members recently took part in a refrigeration course out of An Arbor, Michigan," Plumbers & Steamfitters Training Director George Schalk said. "I doubt if there is anywhere else in Western New York that is offering this kind of teleconferencing training. It provides our members with a vast array of invaluable resources by just dialing up a source and we're in on it. We've spent more than $80,000 on this system and we presently have three HVAC instructors who continually take advantage of what it has to offer."
Members of Plumbers & Steamfitters Local 22 take part in classroom training at the union's Orchard Park headquarters on California Road. The classroom features what Training Director George Schalk describes as "interactive white board that is hooked up to a web/wireless device so training instructors can provide our members with information on everything from basic math to medical gas installation. Whatever they need, you name it, they can do it on these interactive white boards."
At an investment of nearly $1 million, the expansion allowed the Plumbers & Steamfitters Union Local 22 to increase its training area capacity by 10,000-square-feet to an area that now totals nearly 14,000 square feet. The expansion also allowed the union to reconfigure its training facility, which features larger, more modern classrooms, a state-of-the-art computer classroom and hands-on training area for welding and other activities.
"There are currently about 130 apprentices in our program, and our training programs have gotten more technical and detailed, so there was a tremendous need to upgrade and expand our facilities," said Local 22 Training Director George Schalk. This computer-controlled orbital welding machine is used to train Local 22 members to handle high-quality welds for the pharmaceutical, food service and computer chip industries.
"On the average Local 22 invests three quarter of a million dollars into our training programs every year, which have taken on an international flair with the ability to teleconference anywhere into the U.S.A. and the world. Now we have built a network of people through the union, major universities and companies where we can offer and train people in the newest technology that will be used by our apprentices and journeymen in the years to come," he said.U.A. Plumbers & Steamfitters Local 22's Refrigeration Shop provides apprentices and journeymen with what they need when it comes to learning the ins and outs of everything from Cryogenics to Food Handling to HVAC.
The expansion to the union's California Road facility also allowed Plumbers & Steamfitters Local 22 to relocate its Funds Office from Packard Road in Niagara Falls to the Orchard Park headquarters.
